A National Health System

NewAustralia supports a government funded health system. All government health funding should be directed directly to provision of health care instead of being directed through the inefficient $4.5 billion Private Health Insurance rebate - as per Treasury advice.

The "Medicare Safety Net" is also highly inefficient and inequitable. The ~$500 million funding for this scheme should directed to Public Health.

The extra public spending could be used to treat public patients in private hospitals if this is quicker and cheaper than removing the current bottlenecks in public hospitals.

Medicare + Denticare + Ambulance

All essential (non-cosmetic) dental care and ambulance services should be added to Medicare. This can be funded by:

Choice

Public patients should be able to choose the health services they utilise, subject to availability. Thus a public patient should be able to choose between available public hospitals and doctors.

State Government Control of Health

Newaustralia proposes all health and related services be controlled by the State Governments (See suggested split of Federal and State responsibilities on Republic page). This includes:

Why the States should control health

Remaining Federal Responsibilities

Note that the above changes could be made without constitutional changes. Constitutional change would however set such changes in stone.

Junk Food Control

New regulations are required to curb the consumption of food rich in saturated fats, sugar and/or salt. The current obesity crisis is primarily caused by the over supply of bad 'food' made worse by lack of exercise. Little progress is likely to be made in fighting obesity while the supply of junk food continues.

WEIGHT LOSS

- The average Australian spends $34 a year.

JUNK FOOD

- The average Australian spends $586 a year.

Alcohol

NewAustralia supports volumetric taxing of alcohol. This means that an alcoholic product is taxed according to the volume of alcohol it contains irrespective of retail price. The tax rate would rise steeply for all high alcohol drinks encouraging 'lighter' products. NewAustralia supports banning all kins of advertising of alcoholic products over a certain strength.
