18. Lift Events
a. In the interest of competitor safety, the following restriction applies to the Youth, Junior and Teen
categories only. Any lift, which involves a full-length, head first dive by the dancer from a height
equal to or higher than their partner's shoulder height while standing erect is not permitted.
b. Entrants in Lifts events must execute at least three separate lifts, jumps, and drops or throws each
time they compete.
c. Youth Lifts, Adult Lifts and Nifty Fifties Lifts are lift Events.
19. No Lift Event
a. If one of the dancers would, if uncontrolled and without the support of their partner, fall to the
floor, then this move or position, for the purposes of this competition is classified as a lift.
b. A dip, lean or sway will be allowed to end the dance in these events.
c. Junior No Lifts, Teen No Lifts, Young Adult No Lifts, Masters No Lifts, Golden Age No Lifts, Adult
Beginners, Adult Intermediate, Adult Advanced, Youth Beginners, Youth Intermediate, Youth
Advanced and the first song of the Adult State Title and Youth State Title are No Lift Events.
20. Lift Optional Events
a. In the interest of competitor safety, the following restriction applies to the Junior and Teen
categories only. Any lift, which involves a full-length, head first dive by the dancer from a height
equal to or higher than their partner's shoulder height while standing erect is not permitted.
b. Entrants in a Lifts Optional Event may execute as many Lifts, jumps, sweeps, dips and throws as
desired or no lifts at all.
c. Both Doubles events, the Teams event and the second song of the Adult State Title and Youth State
Title are Lift Optional Events
21. Doubles
a. The doubles event is considered a separate category and there will be no restriction in competitor
combinations.
b. Age criteria are to be observed for each event.
c. The Doubles Event is a Lifts Optional Event i.e. entrants may execute as many Lifts, jumps,
sweeps, dips and throws as desired or no lifts at all. Conditions of Rule 21 apply.
22. Teams
a. The Team Event is open to dancers of all ages.
b. In the event of there being several teams entered, the Committee may decide to run this event in
the afternoon of the Championships.
c. Each team will comprise of 6 and only 6 dancers and they must change partners at least once
during their routine.
d. Each Team entered will perform alone on the floor to music designated by the Committee.
e. Teams is a Lifts Optional Event i.e. entrants may execute as many Lifts, jumps, sweeps, dips and
throws as desired or no lifts at all. Conditions of Rule 20 apply.
f. The designated music for the event must be obtained from the Committee.
The song for the 2008 Championships is Shoppin' Around by Elvis Presley.
g. A separate entry form is required for this event..
23. State Title Event
a. To be eligible to dance in this event competitors need only to have danced in any other ‘singles’
event (not the Team Event) at these Championships regardless of whether they have qualified
for the final (if applicable) in that event..
b. The first song in the final shall be No Lifts and the second song will be Lifts Optional.
c. Entry is to be pre-paid along with other competition fees.
Other Items
24. Judging Criteria
a. Six judges at the Championship Finals and State Titles for each event.
b. Three elements are scored, each out of ten.
i. Timing - Couples are to be dancing in time with the beat of the music. Footwork and bodywork
should accentuate the beat at all times.
ii. Technique (also includes Variety) - judges will be looking for the flow of moves; minimal
repetition; are they performed with safety; who is leading and who is following; co-ordination
and balance and skill.
iii. Showmanship / Flair - includes an assessment on the competitors' dress, where it should be
complementary, but not necessarily matching colours or fabric; harmony as a couple; are
they enjoying themselves; interpreting the music; energy but not necessarily on effort.
c. In the Finals the slow and fast song will be judged separately so that the final score will be out
of a possible 120 points.
d. The Judging Panel decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
26. Dress Code
a. Competitors in events will wear traditional rock 'n’ roll clothing of the 50's - 60's era and be within
the bounds of public decency.
b. Dress and rubber soled shoes are allowed, but sporting footwear is not permitted.
c. Competitor numbers must be worn on the left leg below the knee of the designated male dancer.
d. A warning may be given if the code in relation to footwear or public decency is not adhered to
and if not corrected the following Penalties will apply:
i. Incorrect Footwear - a points penalty deduction may be imposed.
ii. Incorrect clothing - a points penalty deduction may be imposed or in the case of exceeding
the bounds of public decency - disqualification.
