Malcolm Barker
VRRDA President
Malcolm started learning Rock’n’Roll dancing in 1994 at the Colac Rock’n’Roll Club. Although he had no previous experience in any form of dance, it quickly became his main leisure activity, eventually leading to competition and teaching.
He previously had been involved in archery, representing Victoria four times and Australia once; collecting four National Championship Gold medals and two National Records, as well as many placings at State Level competitions. Malcolm is the office manager at a Colac car dealership. He is interested in bushwalking, skiing, reading and is a member of the Richmond Football Club.
Along with his partner Fiona, he has competed in every VRRDA State Championship Finals since 1995, taking out 1st placings in Lifts, Masters, Advanced, Triples and Teams Events over the years and placing 3rd in the Senior Title in 2002 and 2005. They have competed interstate regularly and have achieved over 100 placings in competitions since 1995 over a range of events.
Fiona Barclay
VRRDA Secretary
Fiona also learned Rock ‘n’ Roll at the Colac Rock'n'Roll Club in 1994 after returning to Colac from Melbourne with her two children. She and Malcolm first competed at the VRRDA competition in Colac in 1995. (Still regarded by many as the best State Finals yet with over 800 people in attendance). This made a big impression on them and they were hooked.
Fiona’s daughter Sarah, 19, was also a keen ‘rocker’ when she was younger winning several State Doubles Titles but son Michael, 14, has no interest in dance! Fiona works as a lending assistant at a mortgage broking firm and enjoys walking, reading, cooking and is a member of the Geelong Football Club.
She and Malcolm have made many enduring friendships through Rock ‘n’ Roll both at their local club and through travelling around to competitions. They commenced teaching at the Colac R’n’R Club last year and get great satisfaction from seeing their students enjoying themselves and improving their dancing.
