We still have a bit more to see like Cape York at the North East tip of Australia.

We landed in San Diego, Argentina then a spectacular flight down the spine of the Andes to Ushuaia the World's most southerly city.
There we boarded the Explorer II for a 12 day cruise to Antarctica, a mixture of iceburgs, penguins and other sea creatures and getting trapped with our Zodiac in the ice.  A feature of the cruise was daily lectures about the birds, wildlife and history of Antarctica. After the cruise we returned to Ushuaia to visit the Tierra del Fuego National Park and the southern mountains of Patagonia.

Canada - Rocky Mountains and Inside Passage Cruise May 2001
Lake Louise, Canadian Rockies
Lake Louise from our hotel room.
The trip started with a look around Vancouver.
We visited Stanley Park with magnificent views of the city and Lion's gate Bridge, Gass Town with it's old steam clock, Granville Island a former industrial area converted into an arts and crafts market and the Sky Rail to the summit of grouse Mountain where we enjoyed dinner and an Indian Natives floor show. We then boarded a coach and the ferry to Vancouver Island that included Victoria, Butchart Gardens and Chemainus an old Indian village.  Back on the ferry to the mainland then up into the Rockies via Whistler, Sun Peaks, Jasper, the Icefields Parkway to Banff.  Back to Vancouver on the Rocky Mountaineer with an overnight stop in Kamloops.  Finally a 7 day cruise on the Holland America ms Zaandam along the Inside Passage to Glacier Bay with stops at Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway.  At each stop there was a full day to explore the town and take a side trip like whale watching or  a train ride up the mountains to Horseshoe Pass and the Yukon.  The glaciers in Glacier Bay put on a magnificent show for us on a beautiful sunny day with chunks of ice the size of a 20 storey block of apartments crashing into the sea.

The UK May  to August 1997
 Thatched Cottage, the Cotswolds
A thatched cottage in the Cotswolds, England.
This was our 40th wedding anniversary trip to visit our relatives and see parts of the UK we didn't have the time or money to see during the 30 years we lived there.  Devon and Cornwall, the thatched cottages and quaint villages with funny names like Upper and Lower Slaughter in the Cotswold's, Bath, Salisbury and Stonehenge were all places we had never been.  Places like the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, Stately Homes, Castles and ruined abbeys, and interesting spots close to our home town were seen again but in a different light.  We had seen quite a bit of Scotland and Wales but discovered a lot more with a closer look.  We also had a week in Ireland taking in Dublin, Waterford and the famous pottery, Cork, Blarney Castle to kiss the Blarney Stone, Killarney, Tralee, Galway, and Connemara. 15 wonderful weeks and 15Kg excess baggage on the flight home for which, fortunately, we weren't charged.

New Zealand April 1994
Lady Knox Geyser, North Island.
Lady Knox Geyser, Wai-o-Tapu,
North Island, New Zealand.
We booked our flights to arrive in Auckland and leave from Christchurch and the first and last nights hotel accommodation.  For the rest of the time we did bed and breakfast, a good choice as we got to meet some very generous hosts, plying us with a large glass of scotch on arrival or cleaning the car windscreen in the morning.  We got a really good deal on a hire car they wanted delivered to the South Island.
On the North Island we travelled to Rotorua and visited Whakarewarewe geothermal area, Hell's Gate with boiling whirl pools and the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere, the colourful volcanic features at Waiotapu and Hidden Valley possibly the best thermal area in the world.  We then drove to Wellington via Lake Taupu, Waitomo glow worm caves, Mount Roapahu and Wanganui and put our car on the ferry.  Travelling through Queen Charlotte Sound to Picton was absolutely beautiful.  On the South Island we went to Mount Cook and then Queenstown with a ride on the sky rail and a  Haka feast. Next was Milford Sound with its steep cliffs and waterfalls and dominant Mitre Peak.  We then travelled up the West Coast with stops at Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, Greymouth with its black beach then over the mountains via Arthur's pass to Christchurch.

Glossop our home town in England
Glossop our home town and the Nab.
Derbyshire, England.
After 24 years in Australia, our first trip back to the UK to visit relatives and meet old friends.  We spent much of the time revisiting our old haunts and local places of interest.  Some had changed dramatically others were still the same as we remembered.  One thing we had forgotten was how close together places are.
On the way we had a 5 night stop over in L.A. and managed to fit in a day at Disneyland, a visit to Universal Studios and Warner Brothers and a trip down the coast to San Diego and Tijuana including a stop to see the San Juan Capistrano Mission, famous for its swallows that arrive in March and leave in October.
