News flash - Nick abandons kayak to attend Macca's parents 50th Wedding anniversary.
It was Sunday night 17th April 2005 and Nick Waterman stumbled through the door of the Stella Maoris tennis club with a wild look in his eyes and salt encrusted around his face. The crowd quieted as people turned to face this apparition."I've lost me ship, we floundered on the rocks out the back of Rye" he gasped and fell forward.
Well, not really. As memory serves he strode up to the bar and asked Phil McEvoy for a beer and then proceeded to tell all those around him (Chris McEvoy) that he'd lost his kayak at one of the back-beaches and had to swim for shore. His only thought was "must get to Macca's" (as there was sure to be free beer) so he abandoned the search after running up and down the beach a couple of times.
Anyhow, seems Nick neglected to think of the effect of an empty kayak rolling up onto the sand and what people might think. In fact, when Nick rang the Rosebud police station to see if anyone had 'handed in my lost kayak' he Ws asked by the station sergeant"I guess that means we can call off the search eh Mr Waterman?". It seems that two Westernport search and rescue boats and one police helicopter had been searching for the lost kayaker for 3 hours at a cost of $3,000 an hour! While a police officer was stationed at the car park waiting to see if any of the cars would be left at the end of the day.
As seen in the Mornington Peninsula Leader Newspaper a few days later (Thanks Mauyra for spotting this one)
