ABOUT MY WORK
 
I am a maker in papier maché who specialises in making maps and globes as well as a whole menagerie of animals. The inspiration for my work is a lifelong love of travel and an ensuing fascination with maps, atlases and travel narratives.

I find papier maché is an ideal medium to combine my enjoyment of working in 3-D with a love of painting and bright colours. It's a pliable material that produces great shapes and an ideal painting surface, but also has an incredible strength.

Maps and Globes
Globes
 
The maps and globes are made from papier maché and other found and recycled materials - such as broken windscreen glass, old telephone wire, scraps of fabric, card and polystyrene foam. They are painted in acrylic and include a wide range of hand-sculpted 3-D details. These range from geographical features such as mountains, rivers and rainforests, to a menagerie of animals - sea monsters and spouting whales to camel trains and kangaroos. I also include different modes of transport - including steam engines, hot air balloons and rickety old buses as well as major architectural features, such as pyramids in Egypt and South America, skyscrapers in New York and temples in South East Asia.
                 
 
Each globe can be individually designed to the client's request, with features being added or altered to reflect the owners own travels, background and view of the world.
                     
                 
 

3-Dimensional Pictures
3-D Pictures
 
A new and recent departure for me has been the developement of 3-D pictures including a Noah's Ark and a Jungle scene. More privately commissioned pictures are on their way, including an Underwater scene. Although these take considerably more time I am hoping to explore this new way of working further and welcome your ideas.
                 
                     
 

Animals and Bowls
 
I also make a range of papier maché animals and bowls in the same humorous style; from everyday cats and dogs to more exotic llamas, giraffes and unicorns. The range is always expanding and commissions for new animals are welcome. I craft and paint everything by hand, to give each animal its own individual character. The most important thing is that people enjoy looking at and using my work, getting as much fun from it as I've had in creating it.
