The Will of Samuel Coe

 

The People of the State of New York, By the Grace of God, Free and Independent: To all to whom these presents shall come, or may concern, send Greeting: Know ye, that at the village of Morrisville, in the town of Eaton and County of Madison, on the 18th day of January 1864**, before Joseph Mason, Esquire, our Surrogate of our County of Madison aforesaid, the last Will and Testament of Samuel Coe, late of the town of Madison in said County, (a copy whereof is hereunto annexed,) was approved, and is now approved and allowed by us; and the said deceased, having whilst living and at the time of his death, goods, chattels and credits within this State, by reason whereof the proving and registering the said Will, and the granting of Administration of a and singular, the said goods, chattels and credits, and also the auditing, allowing and final discharging the accounts thereof doth belong unto us:  And whereas, the said deceased did, in and by his last Will and Testament, constitute and appoint John S. Lucas sole executor thereof:  And he having taken and subscribed an oath before said Surrogate faithfully and honestly to discharge the duties of such Executor.

 

Now, therefore, we do hereby grant unto you, the said John S. Lucas full power, by these presents, to administer and faithfully dispose of said goods, chattels and credits, according to the provisions and directions of said Will, and to ask, demand, recover and receive the debts, which, unto the deceased whilst living, and at the time of his death, did belong; and to pay the debts which the deceased did owe, so far as such goods, chattels and credits will thereunto extend, and the law requires.  Hereby requiring you to make, or cause to be made, a true and perfect Inventory of all and singular, the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased, which have or shall come into your hands, possession or knowledge.  Also, to make, or cause to be made, duplicates of such Inventory, and cause the same to be signed by the appraisers, and the same so made and signed, that you make return thereof the same to be signed by the appraiser, and the same so made and signed, that you make return thereof the same to be signed by the appraisers, and the same so made and signed, that you make return thereof to the Surrogate of the County of Madison, within three months from the date hereof, and further to render a just and true account of your Administration, when thereunto required.

 

In Testimony Whereof, we have caused the seal of office of our said Surrogate to be hereunto affixed.  Witness Joseph Mason, Esquire, Surrogate of said County, at Morrisville in said County, the 18th day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty* four.

*  This uniform document was outdated, in that it contained the word fifty, regarding the decade.  The fifty is crossed out and replaced, in hand, with sixty.
