Where did it begin? - is the Third Age? U3A was founded in Toulouse, France in 1972 to improve the quality of life for older people through contact with academic programs run by the university. The idea spread rapidly through Europe, and the nomenclature of the 'Third Age' as the age of 'active retirement' following the first two ages (youth and work/homemaking) became accepted. An International Association of U3As, established by 1975, gained recognition from the UN and UNESCO. In 1984 the first Australian U3As were formed in Melbourne, based on the British model. They spread quickly throughout Victoria, by 1989, to every other State and Territory, developing as voluntary, self-help organizations. There are now over 200 U3As throughout Australia, of which almost 100 are here in Victoria. | |||||||||
| Why University? 'University' is used in its original meaning as a place of meeting and discussion - not as a place with entry requirements and examinations. | ||||||||||
| Kingston U3A The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a voluntary community organization that provides low-cost learning for older people, enabling them to keep both mentally and physically active and alert. Before the City of Kingston Council amalgamations, Kingston U3A was Mordialloc-Chelsea U3A which was formed in 1995 by separating from Bayside U3A. Bayside U3A became Moorleigh U3A in the City of Glen Eira. U3A means many things: one of our members expressed it like this - "Thank you for telling me about it. I'm here a lot, it's made a big difference to my Life". | ||||||||||
