The history of Albany Creek Neighbourhood watch area as recalled by a local resident....

Warick Foote penned these memories in January of 2006.

Ten years ago, in response to approaches by one or two concerned citizens in what was then called the Country Club Estate, local councilor Mike Charlton called a public meeting with a view to setting up a Neighbourhood Watch in our area. This meeting, in the clubhouse (Ed: now the business premises of Queensland Insurance Services), was chaired by him and attended by police officers and several local residents. We were informed that we would need to have a petition signed by 75% pf the residents in the estate at the time seeking the establishment of a Neighbourhood Watch before anything could be done.

As I had retired a few years beforehand, I volunteered to collect signatures from residents, which I did. I forget the required number, but 300 comes to mind. I don’t recall whether that was the number of residents in the estate at the time or the number required for the petition. In any event, the required percentage was obtained, so a further meeting was eventually called. This was well attended, and at it volunteers were called for the positions on the committee. During my rounds collecting signatures I met Len Pedwell who offered his services in any capacity required. As he had done that, I dobbed him in at the meeting for the position of President, and he was “elected” unanimously! Paul Mortensen was elected as Treasurer. I forget who our first secretary was, but others who volunteered their services included Julie Stewart, Richard Giles and Jim Mumford.
